JUSTIN BIEBER: Interview with Billboard

NEW YORK (Billboard) - A year ago, Justin Bieber was a kid from Toronto who had a gift for singing sweet-natured covers of Usher hits, a penchant for playing the drums and a resourceful mother who posted clips of him on YouTube .

Today, Bieber could be the biggest tween heartthrob in music. After signing with Island Records , with the support of his mentor, Usher , the 15-year-old released his debut single, "One Time," in the summer and almost instantly turned his online audience into an army of dedicated fans. "Bieber mania," as his management now calls it, has spread so quickly that NBC says more than 2,000 people attended his October 12 "Today" performance at New York's Rockefeller Plaza -- the largest crowd for any artist this year, including Miley Cyrus .

Bieber's second single, "One Less Lonely Girl," recently joined "One Time" on the Billboard Hot 100 , and a third, "Love Me," which lifts its hook from the '90s Cardigans' hit "Lovefool," also looks poised to enter the fray. With his debut album , "My World," due November 17, Bieber reflects on his whirlwind of a year, the experience of recording and co-writing his album and how he stays connected with fans.

Billboard : When did you first think you might have a talent for music?

Justin Bieber: I've always loved music, especially percussion ... I'm a big fan of (Blink-182 drummer) Travis Barker. My mom bought me my first drum kit when I was 4 because I was banging on everything around the house, even couches. I picked up the guitar when I was 6 and taught myself to play, but I didn't really start singing until I was 10.

Billboard: How did you start taking it seriously?

Bieber: I entered a singing competition, and some of my relatives who couldn't make it wanted to see how I did. I posted the videos on YouTube , and then other people started viewing and subscribing. I didn't tell my friends because they didn't really know that I could sing. They knew me for playing sports. I just wanted to be a regular kid, and I knew they wouldn't treat me the same way if I told them.

Billboard: Your first three singles are all about young love. What are the rest of the songs on "My World" like?

Bieber: Most are about love and stuff that girls can appreciate, but I also co-wrote a song called "Down to Earth." It's a ballad about the feelings I had when my parents split up and how I helped my family get through it. I think a lot of kids have had their parents split up, and they should know that it wasn't because of something they did. I hope people can relate to it.

Billboard: Do you still keep up with your fans on YouTube?

Bieber: Oh, definitely. I think the Internet is the best way to reach your fans. A couple of years back, artists didn't have that tool, so why not use it now? I'm also on Facebook , and my fans got together and sent me a "Get Well" card on Twitter when I was sick the other day. That was really cool. For now, I'm too worried about getting too close to the fans. I don't share much personal information.

Billboard: What has been the biggest change for you in the past year?

Bieber: I've gained a lot more fans, and I'm able to travel a lot more. I went to the U.K. for the first time in the summer, and hundreds of girls came out to see me. I wasn't totally surprised because a lot of the people who comment on my YouTube videos are from overseas, but I still had no idea that many people would come.

Billboard: In September, you presented at the MTV Video Music Awards and defended Taylor Swift after Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech. What was that like?

Bieber: When I first found out I was going to the VMAs , I was like, "Wow, this is such a big deal -- let's go shopping!" After I presented, Taylor Swift thanked me for saying that she deserved to win her award. She said, "Thanks for sticking up for me, lil' bro," and I was like, "Yeah, I've got your back." I wasn't nervous at all, though ... I never get nervous. I don't think any performer really does.

TAYLOR & TAYLOR: Lautner doesn't want to be Swift song subject matter

Taylor Lautner admits he'd be scared if girlfriend Taylor Swift wrote a song about him.

The 'Twilight Saga: New Moon' star knows his new beau is famed for penning tunes about her life but says he's not sure if he would comfortable being the subject of one.

He said: "That's a scary thing. I don't know if she has. I have no idea."

During a recent interview, 'Love Story' singer Taylor refused to confirm speculation the pair - who are starring in a new movie together 'Valentine's Day' - are dating but admitted the 17-year-old actor was "amazing".

She said: "He's an amazing guy and we're really close...and ah....yep.....and we're in a movie together and I am really excited about seeing it."

Taylor and Taylor were first spotted together at a Los Angeles Kings hockey game last month and she has since introduced him to her mother.

She recently admitted: "I love him, he's so cute."

TAYLOR SWIFT: SNL monologue

The Love Story hitmaker took over presenting duties at the weekend and used her opening musical number to laugh about her break-up with the middle Jonas Brother, who famously dumped her in a brief phone call last year.

In a skit titled Monologue Song (La La La), she sang, "You might think I bring up Joe, the guy who broke up with me on the phone, but I'm not gonna mention that in my monologue..."

Swift then sent a personal message to the LoveBug singer, quipping, "Hey Joe, I'm doing real well!"

The 19-year-old star went on to address rumours linking her to Twilight hunk Lautner, fuelling romance reports by winking and blowing a kiss into the camera for him.

She said, "And if you're wondering if I might be dating the werewolf from Twilight - 'Hi Taylor' - but I'm not gonna mention that in my monologue."

And the teenage country sensation also proved she had put Kanye West's rude interruption at the MTV Video Music Awards behind her by joking about the incident in her opening number.

She added, "You might be expecting me to say something bad about Kanye, and how he ran up on the stage and ruined my VMA monologue, but there's nothing more to say 'cause everything's OK, I've got security lining the stage..."

West stormed the stage at the September ceremony to proclaim Swift's prize should have gone to Beyonce.

The rapper was rumoured to be making an appearance on SNL with Swift to win over his critics, but the claims proved to be false.

Swift also portrayed Colombian beauty Shakira in a parody of her hit Hips Don't Lie, renaming the track Bunny Hips Don't Lie.

DAKOTA & KRISTEN: Became really close through filming

Robert Pattinson isn't Kristen Stewart's only kindred spirit from The Twilight Saga's sprawling ensemble of young actors.

Dakota Fanning, another former child star, bonded with Stewart when they made two films back to back: The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Runaways (about the 70s girl-band fronted by Joan Jett).

"We became really close," Fanning tells Teen Vogue in its December issue. "It's like we'd known each other our whole lives. We talk all the time."

Playing evil vampire Jane in New Moon, Fanning, 15, found it difficult victimizing her new friend. "Being mean to her was really weird. It's like, Sorry dude!"

As sisterly punk rockers Joan Jett (Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Fanning) in The Runaways, she says "The relationship that Joan and Cherie have in the script is kind of the one that Kristen and I have in real life . . . minus the destructive part."
Speaking of destructive, Fanning assures Teen Vogue that she'll steer clear of the dangerous path taken by other adolescent stars. "I get my rebellion out through movies," she explains. "I'm boring that way. I enjoy having a normal life."

How normal? She's a varsity cheerleader (and recently named homecoming princess) at her private L.A. school, and loves eating sushi and watching The Rachel Zoe Project with her friends. She's only dated "one boy from school. I have a small class, so the pool is very limited."

TWILIGHT: To begin filming Breaking Dawn in 2010

You can stop holding your breath twi-hards, Robert Pattinson has revealed that filming for the fourth Twilight film will start in the 2010 northern hemisphere autumn.

Digital Spy reports that Pattinson made the announcement at a press junket for New Moon (which releases worldwide next week!).

RPatz did however say that "they may well change that."

If the man that plays brooding vamp Edward Cullen is right that will mean a long drink between films for Twilight fans. The third book and film in the series, Eclipse is set to release in the 2010 northern hemisphere summer.

Before setting foot on the set of Breaking Dawn, however, Pattinson is set to film Unbound Captives, alongside Oscar winning actress Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman.

The film is set to be filmed partly in New Zealand and the unofficial word is that Pattinson will heading here.

ROBERT PATTINSON: Wants to be romantic ..but can't

Robert Pattinson isn't brave enough to be romantic.

The 'Twilight' actor - who is rumoured to have an on/off relationship with his co-star Kristin Stewart - says he struggles to impress women he has a crush on because he is too nervous about making a loving gesture.

The 23-year-old heartthrob said: "I can't think of a single romantic thing that I've ever done.

"I would never serenade someone to be romantic - you have to have so much balls to do that.

"I put a flower in someone's locker when I was 15 years old, this girl called Maria. She thought that it was someone else and the other guy claimed it as well, which is great."

Despite his hopeless ways, the actor says he still has an appreciation for romance, insisting it isn't only girls who like it.

He said: "It's like saying guys can't appreciate romance. I've watched Titanic and I didn't think, 'Oh, this is a girl's film'."

The actor also admitted he has an obsessive streak - and refuses to take advice from anyone.

He told America's People magazine: "I have very, very specific ideas about how I want to do my work and how I want to be perceived, to the point of ridiculousness sometimes.

"I don't listen to anyone else. That's why I don't have a publicist - I can't stand it if someone's trying to tell me to do something which might be a mistake."

GOSSIP GIRL: Oh Em THREE !

The highly controversial "Gossip Girl" threesome is about to go down on Monday night's (November 9) episode of the saucy teen soap. And, with so many of the cast being possible suspects in the naughty storyline, it's only a matter of time before we know who hooks up. And with Ed Westwick's Chuck Bass already having shared a kiss with a guy on the show, the threesome will probably be even more provocative.

Penn Badgley recently threw his name into the threesome ring when he teased to MTV News that he was willing to do it with the other two male hotties on the show: Westwick and Chace Crawford, if need be. "I can't tell you that," he said, jokingly adding, "Hypothetically, it's all three guys."

Meanwhile, his co-star Leighton Meester didn't say much about what we can expect, except that she approves of the show continuing to push the boundaries, especially now that Blair and the crew are in college. "I think all of this is just so everybody grabs their attention, and we're all in college now, so we can definitely push the limit with the sexuality," she said. "Which is fine by me."

But leave it to Michelle Trachtenberg to open up and reveal some of the devilish details she'd like to see happen in the much-hyped, "worth waiting for" threesome. "I would imagine it's going to involve at least one boy and one girl, so ..." she said, adding with a laugh, "We'll go with Blake [Lively] and Leighton [Meester]. It would be a crazy lady threesome. It's not going to happen. I'm just messing with you. ... It's actually going to be, like, a tensome."

UPDATE: The threesome included Dan, Vanessa, & Olivia.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?: About the threesome? COMMENT!

MILEY CYRUS: Wants to be a role model, not an idol

Miley Cyrus doesn't want to be "an idol" for her young fans.

The "Hannah Montana" star insists she would rather be a role model who people look up to than an idealistic figure that teenagers want to be like.

She said: "If you look at me as a role model I agree with it. If you look at me as an idol, I don't agree.

"An idol for me is someone that you want to replicate. You want to be them.

"I don't wish that on anyone, to lose what they have personally, because that's when your spark goes."

Miley, 16 - whose controversial behavior has included appearing in racy photos published in Vanity Fair magazine, dancing with a stripper pole during this year's Teen Choice Awards, and seemingly grabbing her crotch during a concert - also revealed she is planning to undertake charity work in Indonesia next year.

She told Britain's Daily Record newspaper: "I've been planning going to Indonesia since I was eight.

"It's something I've always wanted to do, and I was never old enough to go with my church when they all headed out there."

Miley was recently voted Worst Celebrity Influence by a teen website.

DEMI LOVATO: Sick of dating rumours

Disney star Demi Lovato is urging the press to stop speculating about her relationship with Jonas Brothers singer Joe Jonas - because she's sick of seeing romance rumours splashed across the front pages.

The 17 year old, who starred alongside the sibling trio in music movie Camp Rock, fuelled speculation she's in a relationship with Joe after the pair was spotted enjoying a double date with the singer's brother, Kevin Jonas, and his fiancee Danielle Deleasa, last month.

Lovato has dismissed the reports and is sick of the media using her love life to fill gossip columns.

Taking to her Twitter.com blog, she writes, "There's been a lot of rumours lately that I'm dating one of my best friends, Joe. I can promise my entire career that I am not. He's incredible, but we don't have feelings for each other in that way. I love you guys, and I wouldn't lie about that.

"It's unfortunate that some people out there are so desperate for attention that they have to make up gossip to keep their site alive. But that's how this whole city works I guess. It just makes me sad that people are that mean in this world."

JONAS BROTHERS: JONAS picked up for a season two

Looks like the Jonas Brothers are settling in well as sitcom stars!
The Disney Channel comedy starring Kevin, 21, and Joe, 20, and Nick, 16, titled JONAS, has been picked up for a second season, the network announced Monday. Production is slated to begin in Hollywood on the series, which is tentatively set for a mid-2010 debut.

Earlier this month, during the European leg of their Jonas Brothers World Tour, Kevin, Joe and Nick also began work on the second installment of their short-form reality show, Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream. It will also premiere in early 2010, followed by Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, the sequel to the Disney Channel film the group starred in last summer.

The new season of JONAS will follow the brothers as they pursue independent careers (Joe appears in a Hollywood film, Kevin shadows a famous director, and Nick goes to work on a new album).

GLEE: Sue Sylvester to sing?

It is our strong suggestion that the producers of the show Glee be hobbled if they don't comply!

If you are a fan of Glee and you have been waiting for Jane Lynch's big number, you're going to have to wait awhile, since there are no plans as of yet to get the coach of the Cheerios to belt out a tune.

But it's not because Jane doesn't want to! Quite the contrary, she is “campaigning strongly” for her singing debut and she won't rest until she gets it.

MILEY CYRUS: Doesn't even like pop music

Miley Cyrus openly admitted that she's actually never heard a Jay-Z song, referencing her current Top 40 hit, Party in the USA, adding that she doesn't listen to "pop music."

We wouldn't quite classify Jay as pop, but she's just bein' Miley!

She continues to basically bash the song, further stating that it's "not even my style of music":

"I don't know, I didn't write the song, so I have no idea. Honestly, I picked that song because I needed something to go with my clothing line. I didn't write it and ... I didn't expect it to be popular, originally. It was just something that I wanted to do, and I needed some songs and it turned out for the best."
Then she throws God into the mix to make herself seem grateful:

"I'm really blessed for it to have done as well as it has. Totally blessed. God has definitely put me in an amazing position with amazing people."

You got really lucky, Miley. Let's just call it like it is!

The only smart thing she said in this interview was that she will NOT be covering dad Billy Ray Cyrus' 1992 hit Achy Breaky Heart.

TWILIGHT: Kristen Stewart spreads lesbian rumours

Kristen Stewart has claimed she is a lesbian in order to defuse rumours about her lovelife.

The 19-year-old actress refused to be drawn on rumours that have repeatedly said she is dating her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, 23, and says she is going to come up with different ways of avoiding the question.

"I've thought about this a lot. There's no answer that's not going to tip you one way or the other. Think about every hypothetical situation: OK, we are. We aren't. I'm a lesbian. I'm just trying to keep something," she told Entertainment Weekly when quizzed on the rumours.

"If people started asking me if I was dating my other co-star Taylor Lautner, I'd be like, 'f**k off!' I would answer the exact same way."

The actress also insisted she would have answered the question honestly if it hadn't been turned into such a "big deal".

"I probably would've answered it if people hadn't made such a big deal about it. But I'm not going to give the finding an answer," she added.

"I know that people are really funny about 'Well, you chose to be an actor, why don't you just give your whole life away?!"

Stewart admitted she and the British actor are "close" but just friends.

"I understand why you would assume that, when we lean on each other for support, there must be something more," she said.
